Sumter County council leaves $1.03 million General Fund shortfall, seeks balanced budget by June 10

County Administrator Gary Mixon presented the General Fund figures at the May 27 Sumter County Council meeting, saying revenues were shown at $64,146,647 while expenditures were $65,179,733 after a $202,545 reduction, leaving an unbalanced deficit of $1,033,086. Council approved second reading of Ordinance #25-1027 with the understanding that the budget must be balanced and no further increases will be made before third reading on June 10, 2025.
The second-reading approval does not adopt final appropriations; Mixon and council members said the numbers reflect work across four budget workshops and additional adjustments are expected before final vote. Councilman Charles T. Edens moved to approve second reading; Councilman Artie Baker seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Council scheduled a public hearing and third reading for June 10, 2025, when the School Board will present and council expects a balanced budget. The administration said a full copy of the Budget Ordinance will be provided once all information is completed.
