Sumter County Council approves multiple rezoning requests, ordinances and appoints codes enforcement officer

Sumter County Council on July 8, 2025 approved multiple land-use items, advanced ordinances and adopted a personnel resolution in unanimous votes recorded in the meeting minutes.
Council approved first readings for three rezoning requests: RZ-25-08 (2825 Camden Highway, applicant Vanessa Simmons) to rezone approximately 3.26 acres from Agricultural Conservation (AC) to General Residential (GR); RZ-25-09 (1980 Hideaway Drive, applicant Adrianna Bowley) to rezone roughly 1.0 acre from AC to Residential-15; and RZ-25-10 (1992 Hideaway Drive, applicant Adrianna Bowley) to rezone about 0.64 acres from AC to Residential-15. Vice Chairman James R. Byrd, Jr. initiated the motions on the first-reading items; motions carried unanimously.
The council also approved third readings for RZ-25-03 (1940 Peach Orchard Road, B and E Investments/Buddy Ward) to convert a +/-3.47-acre portion of a parcel from AC to General Commercial and RZ-25-04 (2615 Peach Orchard Road, Craig Bell) to change zoning from General Commercial (GC) to Light Industrial-Warehouse (LI-W); both passed unanimously.
On ordinances and resolutions, the council approved second reading of Ordinance #25-1031 to authorize sale of five acres on Airport Road and adopted third reading of Ordinance #25-1030 concerning Waste Management; both were approved unanimously. The council also approved first reading of Ordinance #25-1032 to deed a lot to the Town of Mayesville, presented by County Attorney Johnathan Bryan. In new business, the council adopted Resolution R-25-03 appointing James Bostic as a Sumter County codes enforcement officer.
Administratively, County Administrator Gary Mixon announced that Johnny McLeod, a 15-year employee and assistant Public Works director, has been named the department’s new director following the retirement of Karen Hyatt. HR Director Keysa Rogers introduced two Summer Youth Employment Program interns, Jamari Johnson and David McLearn. Council Members McGhaney and Greene reported Penny Project funds were used to purchase new fire trucks for Pleasant Grove (tanker) and Concord (engine) rural stations. The meeting adjourned at 6:38 PM.
