Sumter County Council approves rezoning and Mayesville deed, grants first reading to zoning amendment

At its Aug. 12 meeting, Sumter County Council unanimously approved third readings for a rezoning at 2825 Camden Highway (RZ-25-08) and Ordinance #25-1032 conveying a Mayesville lot, and granted first reading to OA-25-03 to allow civic and social organizations as a conditional use in NC zoning.
Sumter County Council unanimously approved several land-use and administrative actions at its Aug. 12 meeting.
Vice Chairman James R. Byrd, Jr. moved and Councilman Charles T. Edens seconded approval of third reading for RZ-25-08, rezoning a ±3.26-acre parcel at 2825 Camden Highway (TMS# 200-00-02-009) from Agricultural Conservation to General Residential; the motion carried unanimously. The applicant was identified as Vanessa Simmons.
County Attorney Johnathan Bryan presented Ordinance #25-1032 to deed a lot in the Town of Mayesville to the town. Councilman Charles T. Edens moved and Councilmember Vivian Fleming McGhaney seconded approval of third reading; the motion carried unanimously.
Planning Director Helen Roodman presented OA-25-03, a proposed amendment to Article 3, Exhibit 5 of the Sumter County Zoning & Development Standards Ordinance to allow civic and social organizations (NAICS 8134) as a conditional use in the Neighborhood Commercial (NC) district. Vice Chairman Byrd moved and Artie Baker seconded to grant first reading; the measure passed unanimously on first reading.
Earlier in the meeting, the council approved the meeting agenda (motion by Artie Baker, seconded by Tasha Gardner-Greene) and the July 22, 2025 minutes (motion by Charles T. Edens, seconded by Gardner-Greene); both motions carried unanimously.
The meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
