Whitfield County updates school resource officer agreement to comply with HB268 and state law

The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 8 approved an updated intergovernmental agreement among the Whitfield County Board of Education, Whitfield County and the sheriff’s office that revises how student education records and personally identifiable information may be shared under state law.
Commissioner Greg Jones moved to approve the updated School Resource Officer (SRO) Memorandum of Understanding and Commissioner Robby Staten seconded; the motion passed 3-0. County documents state the revision is required to comply with House Bill 268 and O.C.G.A. §20-2-1183. The SRO MOU approved in February 2025 was modified to include terms and conditions addressing sharing of student education records, student data and personally identifiable information among local educational agencies, law enforcement agencies, judges or court personnel and other state or local agencies with a legal interest in the records.
Minutes show the change was made for compliance purposes; the motion does not record new operational detail on when or how the information will be shared beyond citing conformity with the statutory requirements. The board directed staff to update the MOU files and distribute the revised agreement to relevant agencies.
