Commission hears proposal to lower speed limit on Fulford Road and add intersection safety measures

The Ware County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 16 added an ordinance proposal to its regular-meeting agenda that would lower the maximum speed limit on Fulford Road from 45 mph to 35 mph between Scapa Road (Hwy 23) and Keen Drive.
WWDA Director Jason Rubenbauer told the commission the change follows concerns first raised in August 2024 about drivers speeding on Fulford Road and cited five wrecks at the intersection of Fulford Road and Industrial Boulevard over the past six years. The Sheriff's Office provided approval for the reduced speed limit, Rubenbauer said, but several commissioners questioned whether the lower limit alone would deter speeding.
Commissioners discussed installing a four-way stop at the intersection and adding solar-powered flashing lights to stop signs to improve safety, particularly at night. Commissioner Jon Tindall recommended concentrating on physical measures to slow drivers rather than relying solely on enforcement or a posted speed change.
No vote was taken during the work session; the ordinance (Ordinance 2025-01) was placed on the regular-meeting agenda for formal consideration.
