Votes at a glance: Tift County commissioners approve zoning changes, contracts and licenses

At its Feb. 10 meeting the Tift County Board of Commissioners approved several routine and substantive items, including zoning code changes, contract awards, licenses and board appointments.
Zoning and land use: The board approved Resolution No. 2025-02, a text amendment to Chapter 2 of the Tift County Unified Development Code adding corridor overlays for U.S. Highway 82 W and U.S. Highway 319 S. A public commenter, Chris Burchell, warned the overlay could draw businesses away from downtown Tifton; the measure carried 6-0. The board also approved Resolution No. 2025-05 (TC-ZA-24-08), rezoning 21.21 acres on Jordan Road from AG to R-21 for a proposed single-family subdivision; two residents spoke in favor and the board approved the rezoning 6-0.
Contracts and grants: The board approved a notice of award and contract with Southern Concrete for $594,760 to install the Red Oak Road bridge, funded from LMIG and SPLOST VI. The board also approved recipient-subrecipient agreements with GEMA/HS for Hurricane Helene reimbursement and selected Watkins & Associates LLC (engineering) and Sunbelt Consulting LLC (administration) as consultants for Community Development Block Grant projects.
Licenses: The board approved two alcohol beverage licenses after the sheriff’s review and recommendation: Mohammed M. Hossain for Tifton Food Mart at 607 Short St., and Maksudur Rahman for Eldarado Food Mart at 4112 U.S. Highway 41 S; both motions carried 6-0.
Appointments: In addition to the assessor appointments reported separately, the board reappointed Norman Hill and Richard Golden (constitutional seats) and Frankie Mathis (statutory seat) to the Development Authority for four-year terms; motion carried 6-0.
Administrative notes: A public hearing for a Community Development Block Grant application (up to $1,000,000) was postponed to Feb. 20 because the required newspaper notice did not run. County Manager Jim Carter provided information on HB 581 cleanup (referred to as HB 92) and County Attorney Anthony Rowell conducted a conflict-of-interest check related to a rezoning item; no conflicts were declared on the record.
The meeting adjourned after commissioner comments on litter and potholes in their districts.
