County staff told commissioners they will apply for up to $1,000,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds to fund Phase 2 of South Tifton infrastructure improvements, and recommended engineering and administrative consultants to manage the project.
Tift County officials said Tuesday they will pursue up to $1,000,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to build a second phase of infrastructure improvements in South Tifton.
County Manager Jim Carter said Phase 1 of the project in South Tifton is complete and the county is proposing to start Phase 2 with federal CDBG support. "The purpose of the hearing will be to obtain citizens' views and to respond to proposals and questions concerning previous CDBG funded projects and to obtain citizen participation in the development of new proposals including identification of community needs and proposed activities," Carter said during the work session.
Public Works Director Jason Jordan said the Phase 2 project area will include 21st Street, 23rd Street, 25th Street and South College Avenue and that "staff is proposing to install water, sewer, storm drain, curb and gutter." Jordan said staff hopes the Board will be able to award a construction contract about a year from now.
County staff also reported results of procurement for project professional services. Jim Carter said six engineering proposals were received; a three‑person committee (Jason Jordan, Jim Carter and County Clerk Miriam Jordan) recommended hiring Watkins & Associates LLC as engineering consultant. For administrative services, Carter said two proposals were received and the committee recommended Sunbelt Consulting LLC. Both consultant‑selection items were placed on the Feb. 10 consent agenda for formal action.
No construction contract was awarded at the Feb. 4 work session. The county indicated its goal is to complete consultant selection and secure grant approval so that construction procurement can proceed in the coming year.
