Tift County outlines plan to consolidate AT&T lines and add backup public Wi‑Fi

Tift County IT staff reported to commissioners April 8 that an internal audit eliminated 23 unused AT&T lines and that AT&T has announced closure of the local wired center in Tifton, which affects remaining county lines.
IT Director Al Stephenson recommended transitioning the remaining administrative and nonemergency lines to AT&T's Dedicated Internet and Voice Bundle and adopting the Advanced Business Phone solution. As part of the proposal, the county would install a more stable public Wi‑Fi connection to serve as a backup if the county's primary internet connection fails. The proposed agreement would run for two years, after which IT plans to reassess service needs and explore alternative providers.
The board expressed support for placing the agreement on the regular-session consent agenda for routine approval; no contract was executed during the work session.
