Screven County commissioners approve $365,397 mowing contract, equipment purchases and begin road closure process

The Screven County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 13 approved a package of contracts, equipment purchases and actions including a $365,397.75 contract for right-of-way roadside mowing, multiple equipment purchases and the start of a road-closure process.
Commissioner J.C. Warren moved to award the RFP for right-of-way roadside mowing to Thompson Cove for $365,397.75. Commissioners Allison Willis, Ben Thompson and Mike Dixon recused themselves from that vote; the motion carried with the remaining board members in favor.
The board approved multiple equipment purchases: a server for the Tax Commissioner and Tax Assessor’s offices from Micro Computer Plus for $9,835.99; a John Deere backhoe for the Roads & Bridges Department for $122,529 paid with SPLOST funds; and an ice maker for the Recreation Department for $6,120.43 using general funds. All three purchases passed by unanimous vote.
Other action items approved included the FY 2024–25 budget calendar, a Memorandum Agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), and issuing 27 vouchers for an Animal Shelter Spay Day set for Feb. 27, 2024; the vouchers will be funded through donations raised for the shelter.
Commissioner Allison Willis moved to start the process of closing Cypress Pond Road because of safety concerns related to the railroad; that motion passed unanimously. The board also agreed to move forward with identifying a bridge to name in honor of the late Roosevelt Culver, former NAACP president.
In staff updates, Road Superintendent James Woods said work on Jenk Hill Road is awaiting pipe and that the Lawton Road start was pushed back due to weather. Commissioner Rosa Romeo announced a retirement celebration for Allen Burns, executive director of the CRC, scheduled for March 13.
The board recessed into executive session to discuss litigation at 6:59 p.m. and returned to open session at 7:16 p.m., after which Chairman Will Boyd adjourned the meeting.
