Commissioner Steve Hersey on Sept. 5 proposed placing a six‑month moratorium on commercial development and residential projects with more than four units, with an exemption for projects that already have final plat approval.
Hersey said the intent is to allow the county time to plan for rapid growth and suggested the moratorium focus on areas north of Highway 16. Several residents, including Bill and Barb Vargo, spoke against the proposed moratorium during public comment. Commissioner Richard Garrett asked staff to prepare documentation outlining a summary, pros and cons and supporting materials before the board would consider a formal vote. Commissioner Tom McElhenney emphasized the rapid growth in the Lake Oconee area and urged regular review of the county’s Comprehensive Plan.
Chairman B. W. “Bill” Sharp directed that the item return for possible action after the Oct. 22, 2025 work session on development. No motion to impose the moratorium was made and no formal action was taken at the meeting.
