Long County board authorizes hazard pay, hears objections to proposed Elim Church Road convenience store and clarifies hiring practice roles

Ludowici, Ga. — During a regular meeting on Aug. 3, 2021, the Long County Board of Commissioners entered an executive session on personnel and later authorized County Administrator Russell Simmons to administer hazard pay to full-time county employees.
The meeting opened at 9:00 A.M. with Chairman Robert Parker presiding. Public comment included objections from Mrs. Deborah Hicks, Rodney Hicks and Lloyd Murray, who said they were concerned about and disapproved of a proposed convenience store on Elim Church Road. The minutes record their concerns but do not list quoted language or any board response to the commenters during the public-comment period.
Commissioner Florence Baggs asked about the county’s hiring practices. Chairman Parker told the board that "the Commissioners only hire and terminate Department Heads" and that department heads are responsible for hiring and terminating their own employees; he also said applications are kept on file at the Long County Commissioners office.

After returning from the closed session, Chairman Parker moved to authorize County Administrator Russell Simmons to administer hazard pay to full-time employees; Commissioner Jeremy Hall seconded the motion and the board approved it unanimously.
