Long County commissioners appoint new county clerk and road superintendent, reappoint library trustees

LUDOWICI, Ga. — At its May 2, 2023 meeting, the Long County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a series of routine administrative actions, including appointing Brandi Smiley as county clerk and Madison Smith as road superintendent, and reappointing two members to the county library board.
Chairman Robert Parker opened a public hearing at 9:00 a.m. on the 2023 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and called the formal meeting to order at 9:05 a.m. Probate Judge Teresa Odum led the invocation and the commissioners led the Pledge of Allegiance. Those present at the meeting included Vice Chairman Gerald Blocker, Commissioners John Reddish, James Craft and Jeremy Hall, County Attorney James Smith, County Administrator Russell Simmons and Deputy County Clerk Brandi Smiley.
In the first formal personnel action, Chairman Robert Parker moved to appoint Deputy County Clerk Brandi Smiley to the position of County Clerk. Commissioner Jeremy Hall seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. The board also approved the May 2023 agenda and the April 2023 minutes by unanimous vote.
Commissioner Gerald Blocker moved to authorize payment of county bills; Commissioner Jeremy Hall seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The board then appointed Madison Smith as Road Superintendent on a motion by Commissioner Hall, seconded by Commissioner Reddish; that motion also passed unanimously.
The board reappointed Betty Baxter and Linda Smith to the Long County Library Board of Trustees for three-year terms running from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2026. Commissioner Jeremy Hall moved the reappointments; Vice Chairman Gerald Blocker seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Chairman Parker closed the public hearing on the 2023 CDBG with no verbal or written comments recorded. The meeting ended with a motion to adjourn by Commissioner Blocker, seconded by Commissioner Hall; the motion passed unanimously. The minutes were adopted by the Long County Board of Commissioners on June 6, 2023.
