County manager presents employee health insurance options; BCBS renewal negotiated down, Aetna quotes no increase

At the June 2 Ben Hill County workshop County Manager Michael Dinnerman reported a Blue Cross Blue Shield renewal initially showed a 9% increase that he said he negotiated down to 5%, and that Aetna Medical provided a quote with no increase. Commissioners were given the option to remain with BCBS (maintaining ACCG pool membership) or switch to Aetna Medical.
County Manager Michael Dinnerman told Ben Hill County commissioners at the June 2, 2022 workshop that the county’s employee health-insurance renewal with Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) had initially included a 9% increase but that he negotiated the increase down to 5%.
Dinnerman said a quote from Aetna Medical showed no increase. He presented the options to the commissioners and noted that remaining with BCBS would keep the county in the ACCG pool and preserve “extra amenities,” while Aetna’s quote would not increase rates.
The workshop minutes do not record a decision or formal motion on which plan to select. Commissioners were presented with competitive options and the matter remained for future action.
