Coffee County commissioners deny West Green Liquor license citing 500-yard state rule

Coffee County commissioners unanimously voted on June 3 to reject a liquor-license application for JSKAPANI, Inc. d/b/a West Green Liquor at 9897 U.S. Highway 221 North after staff said the location would violate state proximity rules.
County Attorney Tony Rowell reviewed the application and said it was complete but noted a statutory proximity requirement: "There is no deficiency in the application. However, this store is within 500 yards of another existing liquor store," Rowell said. Under state law, two retailers selling distilled spirits may not operate within 500 yards of each other.
Commissioner AJ Dovers moved to reject the application based on the state statute and Commissioner Oscar Paulk seconded; the board voted unanimously to deny the license.
The decision in this meeting closes the county’s action on this application. The applicant may pursue any state-level remedies or reapply from a location that complies with the proximity requirement.
