Ben Hill County commissioners approve transit nonrenewal, 5311 authorization and other routine business; deny alcohol license

The board approved revised construction plans for the Monitor Enrichment Center and authorized Chairman Steve Taylor to sign related correspondence. Commissioners voted to send a non-renewal letter to RMS for the Ben Hill Transit FY2023 contract and approved a 5311 authorizing resolution allowing the Southern Georgia Regional Commission to prepare and submit a 5311 application on the county’s behalf. Commissioners reappointed Senior Citizen Director Cathy Posey to a three-year term on the Southern Georgia Regional Commission Aging Advisory Council and approved the Office of the Public Defender budget and contract for fiscal year 2022–23. The board also received a tax-collection update from Tax Commissioner Barry Foster, who reported on 2021 tax collection efforts and mobile-home sales and noted progress restoring county QuickBooks software.
On licensing, the commission denied an alcohol application for DAAT Quick Stop LLC (applicant Timothy Sullivan). The minutes state the denial followed recommendations from Sheriff Cone and County Manager Michael Dinnerman citing the applicant’s criminal history; the motion to deny passed with the recorded votes of the commissioners.
The board received two annexation notifications from the City of Fitzgerald: a parcel on Benjamin H. Hill Drive (land lot 302, fourth land district) and a parcel on Evergreen Road (land lot 279, fourth land district). The minutes list these as notifications rather than actions requiring county approval.
Vice-Chair Hope Harmon reported she had met Department of Community Affairs Commissioner Christopher Nunn at a legislative breakfast in Atlanta and said they discussed improving regional rental assistance. Chairman Steve Taylor reminded commissioners to consider candidates to fill a vacancy on the DFCS board, which must be filled within 90 days. Commissioner Daniel Cowan announced he is the new chairman of the county Board of Health. The meeting then adjourned.
