The Coffee County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 5 approved a set of administrative and capital actions, all by unanimous vote, including mid‑year budget amendments, a road construction contract, patrol vehicle purchases, a LMIG grant application and a personnel policy change.
County Administrator Wesley Vickers said the General Fund will increase by $354,000 primarily because of health claim costs and the Special District Fund will increase by $45,000; the board voted to approve those mid‑year budget amendments. "We will increase the General Fund by $354,000.00 mostly due to health claim cost," Vickers told the board.
The board accepted a recommendation from Statewide Engineering and awarded the Otter Circle Road construction contract to East Coast Asphalt, LLC, the low bidder at $618,018.39. Administrator Vickers said the project will be paid from SPLOST VII funds. Commissioner Ted O’Steen moved to approve the low bid; Commissioner AJ Dovers seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Bids for five Sheriff’s Office patrol cars were opened; Anderson Ford submitted the low bid ($44,319.50 per vehicle, total $221,597.50). The board approved purchasing the vehicles with SPLOST VII funds.
Vickers presented the annual Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) application to the Georgia Department of Transportation requesting $1,444,579.29 toward a projected $2,403,714.67 in resurfacing and construction work. Matching funds were identified from SPLOST VII and county TSPLOST. The board voted to approve submitting the application.
The board also approved a change to the county personnel policy to allow accrued sick leave to be paid to an employee’s heirs in the event of death, provided the employee was actively employed at the time of death; previously the policy allowed payout only upon retirement.
All motions were approved unanimously. The meeting concluded with several routine rezoning votes and adjournment at 10:36 a.m.
