Pierce County commissioners approved greater staffing and digital support for the county’s recreation programs and cleared specifications for a new ambulance at their April 1 meeting.
Coach Maureen Brown, Recreation Director, told the board roughly 1,000 children had signed up for recreation sports and requested permission to hire a Program Coordinator to handle increased program workload. Chairman Neal Bennett said the position is included in the Recreation budget. Commissioner Randy Dixon moved to approve hiring the Program Coordinator; Commissioner David Lowman seconded and the motion carried.
The board also approved purchase of a Rec‑Help Desk software subscription for $5,700 annually; Brown said the subscription includes training and that the new Program Coordinator will manage the system. Commissioner David Lowman moved to approve the purchase and Commissioner Graham Raley seconded.
On EMS procurement, Chairman Bennett asked Daniel Royal, the county EMS director, whether the ambulance specifications matched the county’s current units. Royal said the new ambulance would be the same except it would be built on a Dodge chassis. Bennett said the new vehicle would take roughly 18 months to arrive; commissioners approved the bid specifications after a motion by Commissioner Randy Dixon and a second by Commissioner Graham Raley.
Next steps recorded in the minutes include finalizing hiring paperwork for the Program Coordinator, executing the software subscription and proceeding with procurement under the approved ambulance specifications.
