Auditor reports ‘clean’ FY2024 opinion; Fayette County earns 30th consecutive GFOA award

Gregory Chapman of Nichols, Cauley & Associates presented the results of Fayette County’s Fiscal Year 2024 annual audit at the Feb. 13 Board of Commissioners meeting and reported an unmodified (clean) opinion on the basic financial statements prepared under GAAP.
Chapman said the audit was conducted in accordance with Auditing Standards Generally Accepted in the United States of America (GAAS) and Government Auditing Standards (GAS). He emphasized that auditors provide reasonable—not absolute—assurance that the statements are free from material misstatement and that the financial statements remain the responsibility of county management. The audit report and required communications were provided to the Board and submitted to the Department of Audits and the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).
Chapman also highlighted a 30th consecutive year in which Fayette County received the GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its 2023 report; he noted only 27 Georgia counties earned that recognition for 2023. The Board and staff received Chapman’s appreciation for their cooperation; Commissioner Charles W. Oddo and Chairman Lee Hearn thanked the Finance Department for its work.
