Fayette County approves pet crematory as conditional use in M-1 zoning

Planning and Zoning Director Deborah Bell presented the item, noting there is currently no pet cremation provider in Fayette County and staff recommended the amendment following a 4-0 Planning Commission recommendation. Bell told the board the proposed use is distinct from human crematoria, would meet fire and health requirements, and is expected to produce minimal traffic and environmental impacts.
Applicant Olisa Rainey said the proposed operation would be small-scale, appointment-based, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency‑compliant. Commissioners asked follow-up questions about likely locations, neighboring uses and potential cross-contamination; Rainey said she would evaluate available M-1 properties if the amendment proceeded, and County Attorney Dennis Davenport clarified a notation on the agenda packet that had been a typo.
Vice Chairman Edward Gibbons moved to approve the text amendment; Commissioner Charles W. Oddo seconded. The motion passed 5-0.
Next steps: The ordinance text will be updated to include Pet Crematory as a conditional use in Sec. 110-146 (M-1) with the stated setback condition.
