Commission debates urgent Autauga Metro Jail repairs; several Stoudemire motions fail

Attorney Dwight M. Richardson III told the Autauga County Commission on June 18 that the Autauga County Metro Jail is in urgent need of repairs and related expenditures. Commissioner Larry Stoudemire responded by proposing a series of measures to address the situation, but each of his motions failed for lack of a second.
Stoudemire moved to open a purchase order to cover all costs associated with closing the Metro Jail and setting up a processing center at the Autauga County Sheriff’s Office (including electricity, phone, cameras, internet service and supplies). He also moved to approve payment of attorney fees for representation of Sheriff Mark Harrell and sheriff’s office employees; to grant a two-step pay increase for all Sheriff's Office employees for work in a hazardous area; to authorize signing memoranda of understanding with other sheriff’s offices for inmate housing, medical care and feeding; and to increase gas and vehicle maintenance budgets for inmate transport. Each of those motions "died for lack of second," and therefore received no vote.
Separately, the commission voted unanimously to promote Jason Hill from sergeant to lieutenant (grade PS306: step 3), effective June 22, 2024, and to grant a one-year, one-step pay increase to part-time Sorna/Evidence Officer Karl Youngblood for satisfactory service. Later in the meeting the commission awarded the contract for new electronic jail controls at the Autauga Metro Jail to the lowest bidder, DPS Group, LLC; that award carried by unanimous vote.
The actions left the commission without an immediate funding decision to address the attorney’s stated urgent repair needs. The commission adjourned at 5:39 p.m. and reconvened the meeting schedule for July 2, 2024.
