Lehigh supervisors appoint zoning officer, approve park gates and trees, debate fire-tax exemption and plan grant requests

The Lehigh Township Board of Supervisors on Oct. 14 made several personnel and capital decisions and debated tax-exemption and grant strategies.
The Board appointed Roxann Colfer as the township's zoning officer with a start date of Oct. 20 after the Zoning Report noted 21 new permit applications for September. "Cindy Miller made a motion to appoint Roxann Colfer as Zoning Officer with a start date of October 20th," the minutes record; the motion passed with all voting 'aye.'
In recreation and public works business, the Board approved $5,720 to install three gates (one at Berlinsville first base and two at Danielsville fields) to provide equipment access and ease operations. The Board also approved purchasing 16 blue spruce trees for $500 to replace berm trees.
The Board debated a request to use taxpayer funds to buy a paver for the Mike McGonigle memorial at St. Nick's Church. Supervisor Cindy Miller opposed using public dollars for a church memorial, saying it would create a precedent and could be controversial; after discussion the Board voted not to purchase the paver.
Representatives from the Indianland Cemetery Association requested exoneration from the Township fire tax (a $52.77 bill), citing nonprofit and cemetery status. Supervisors expressed concern about opening exemptions to other tax-exempt entities; no vote was recorded in the transcript on that request.
Manager Alice Rehrig said the Statewide gaming grant application window is open through Nov. 30 and suggested applying for digital radios; supervisors recommended including the Fire Company in the request. Fire Company official Rick Hildebrand outlined the department's radio needs and the national backlog and expense of fire apparatus, asking the Board to prioritize radios if partial grant awards are received.
The Board also appointed Janet Sheats as its liaison to the Municipal Authority and agreed to place the Billy Carter subdivision on the next agenda for further consideration.
Procedural votes that night included approvals of prior minutes and bills; several motions passed unanimously as recorded in the minutes.
