Charles Mix County approves new Register of Deeds fee, funeral aid and personnel change; auditors report administrative updates

The Charles Mix County Board of Commissioners voted on a set of administrative and consent items at its July 18 regular meeting.
The board approved an annual Register of Deeds fee of $1,200 for copies, scanned documents and weekly reports. Commissioner Nick Stotz moved for approval and Vice Chairman Colin Soukup seconded; minutes record "all in favor; motion carried." Auditor Jason Gant presented the fee proposal and stated the fee is effective July 18, 2024.
The board also approved funeral assistance of up to $3,000 following a coroner recommendation; Vice Chairman Soukup moved approval and Commissioner Stotz seconded. The board accepted the resignation of Christian Ross effective July 15, 2024 on a motion by Vice Chairman Soukup and second by Commissioner Stotz.
Auditor Jason Gant provided several informational updates: a new computer system for the Weed Department is planned, the Budget Hearing previously scheduled for Sept. 12 was moved to Sept. 3, county prisoner housing reimbursement will increase from $90 to $100 per day effective Jan. 1, 2025, Edmunds County has a new jail (noted for context), the SD Highway 50 bridge in Geddes is planned to be named after Terry Rada on Aug. 10, and a CLERP filing was made for court-appointed attorney fees. The Highway Superintendent also briefed the board on flood-related work including culvert replacements and graveled road needs; no formal action was recorded on those updates.
Commissioner Nick Stotz moved to approve the meeting agenda and Vice Chairman Colin Soukup seconded; the board approved the July 11 minutes and adjourned at 11:08 a.m. The board scheduled its next regular meetings for 10:00 a.m. on Aug. 8 at the Courthouse and Aug. 22 at the Wagner Highway Shop.
