Charles Mix County reports more than $3 million in flood damages to roads

Emergency Management Director Mike Kotab told the Charles Mix County Board of Commissioners on July 11 that recent storms have produced county-wide flood damages totaling $3,031,479.17.
Kotab gave a breakdown showing $1,303,022.48 in damage to county roads and $1,728,456.69 to township roads and described ongoing road and infrastructure issues resulting from the flooding. Highway Superintendent Cimpl also reviewed the damage to culverts, the replacement costs, FEMA flood-reporting responsibilities, and the status of the Geddes shop.
Commissioners received the reports and discussed next steps but did not vote on any emergency declarations or immediate funding measures during the meeting. Kotab’s figures will inform the county’s FEMA reporting and any future requests for state or federal assistance.
The commission plans further review as needed at upcoming meetings. The board approved routine agenda items and bills earlier in the session.
