Chamber touts dark-sky tourism as Lakeview seeks revenue; town approves $14 public-safety fee

During public comment at the Dec. 2 Lake County work session, Lake County Chamber of Commerce Director Shelley Batty promoted a new dark-sky sanctuary website (oregonoutbackdarkskysanctuary.com) and reported recent media attention: an Outside Magazine piece, coverage in the Oregonian and recognition of Juniper RV in a Forbes list. Batty said the Outback Naked Calendar fundraiser posted $8,000 in sales the day after the Oregonian story and that proceeds are earmarked to help the Town of Lakeview with winter snow removal. She also announced a members-only Chamber event on Dec. 11 at 5:00 p.m.
Lakeview Town Councilman Marty Collins told the board that Oregon Public Broadcasting planned to visit Lakeview for interviews about the town's fiscal challenges and said the transformer for the new water-treatment plant was expected to arrive on schedule. Collins said the Town had passed a $14-per-month Public Safety Fee intended to fund a police officer and estimated the fee would generate about $218,400 per year.
Commissioners acknowledged the updates and expressed support for local tourism promotion and steps the town is taking to address public-safety staffing and winter-maintenance costs.
