Lake County Railroad: CRISI work about 85% complete; local match commitment needed by end of October

Lake County Railroad officials updated the Board of Commissioners on Sept. 16, saying federally funded work tied to the CRISI grant is nearing completion but faces a local funding shortfall that could slow progress.
“The work related to the CRISI Grant was 85 percent complete,” presenter Toby Van Alvorst told the board, and individual projects were “about 75 percent complete,” according to the county work‑session minutes. Railroad staff reported a peak week this summer when crews replaced 1,018 ties and said they are prioritizing rail replacement inside the Town of Lakeview to address frequent switching activity.
The presenters said not all locally promised match funds had been received. Officials told commissioners the timeline calls for a commitment of local funding by the end of October 2025; the same deadline was cited for sealing procurement pricing to lock in project costs. Vice‑Chair Barry Shullanberger asked for clarity on the prioritization. Van Alvorst said the frequency of car movements and switching within Lakeview made concentrated track replacement there necessary to improve speeds and reliability.
The update also described ongoing bridge and trellis replacement work along the line and emphasized that remaining local match funding is needed to sustain the current production schedule. The presenters asked the county to help ensure local match commitments arrive on the stated timeline so procurement prices can be secured.
No formal action was taken during the work session; commissioners were briefed on status, costs and schedule and may consider funding or commitments in a future session.
