Commissioners review proposed redistricting maps; staff to post maps publicly ahead of October deadline

Plymouth, N.C. ' Washington County's GIS/Mapping Director Harry White and Richard Livingston, lead for the North Carolina Fellows program, presented proposed redistricting maps and recommended posting the maps to the county's Facebook page to solicit public input.
Livingston asked the board to consider adopting a resolution at the next meeting so the county can finalize changes before the statutory Oct. 8 deadline for updated district maps ahead of the next commissioners' elections. Commissioners discussed district sizes and noted District 4 appears significantly larger; White and Livingston said they had tried to even district populations and asked commissioners to review the materials promptly.
Commissioners requested colored maps and versions that include road names as well as one-sheet district maps for each commissioner to review. County Manager/County Attorney Curtis Potter emphasized the narrow window for making changes and invited commissioners to contact staff with questions.
No final redistricting vote was taken at the Sept. 7 meeting; staff indicated they will prepare a resolution for board action at a subsequent meeting.
