Plymouth Municipal Airport director outlines improvements, warns ALP update needed to keep federal funding

Knapp Brabble, director of the Plymouth Municipal Airport, briefed the Washington County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 4 about past improvements and items included in the county's Airport Layout Plan (ALP). He said the ALP must be updated every five years "or we will be unable to receive federal funding." Brabble described a 2006 runway extension (an increase of 1,800 feet to a 5,500-foot runway), a 100,000-pound weight limit on the runway, and a 2019 grant that funded a taxiway to the runway. He listed potential projects to include in the ALP: an AWOS (Airport Weather Observing System), a terminal building, T-hangars and corporate hangars, fencing, and additional timber removal and underbrush clearing to address approach obstructions.
Brabble said he's looking for a way to repair a bump in the runway without full replacement and noted Emergency Management might assist with underbrush clearing rather than chemical spraying. Commissioner Julius Walker asked a technical question about how the runway marking "21" was measured; Brabble said the measurement was taken from the runway center. Commissioner Ann Keyes thanked Brabble for his assistance at the airport, and Vice-Chair Tracey Johnson said she looks forward to the improvements.
