Trillium, NCDOT and tourism officials brief Washington County on health services, road projects and upcoming events

Several outside presenters briefed the Washington County Board of Commissioners during the April 7 meeting.
Dave Peterson, Senior Regional Director of Trillium, gave the annual report and said some next-year caseloads will shift as individual insurance companies assume coverage for some clients, which is expected to change service numbers. Paulique Horton, Washington County Vice-President of the Southern Albemarle Association, asked the county to relay transportation needs to SAA and to prioritize maintenance of existing roads.
NCDOT representatives—Win Bridgers (Division I), Gretchen Byrum, Ronnie Sawyer and Jack Liverman—introduced themselves and provided a county road-project update; NCDOT said mowing cycles should remain the same as last year. Commissioner Keyes raised concerns about the Sound Bridge being shut down in high winds and its effect on emergency management.
Tom Harrison, Travel & Tourism Authority Director, said the county may host rowing races on the river, that drag boat races will not return this year, and that fireworks costs for the Bear Festival have risen dramatically (from about $6,000 previously to approximately $36,000 for a barge show), which will affect festival budgeting and vendor choices.
The commissioners thanked the presenters and acknowledged continued coordination with NCDOT, SAA and tourism partners.
