Tax administrator reports $7.58 million levy, seeks collection authority for FY2022'023

Tax Administrator Sherri Wilkins presented Washington County's annual ad valorem tax report at the July 5 meeting, summarizing levy, collections and delinquent amounts for fiscal year 2021'022.
"In accordance with North Carolina General Statute 105-373, I submit the following report for Fiscal Year 2021 ' 2022," Wilkins told commissioners. She said the total tax levy was $7,581,048.75, adjusted for releases of $8,746.18; discounts taken totaled $64,360.62. Collections processed through the NCVTS system for registered motor vehicles totaled $960,060.90. The amount of real and personal property not collected was $362,078.60. Total collections and credits toward the levy were $7,230,390.95, and collections for prior years totaled $338,030.45.
Wilkins said the tax office works with outside counsel for foreclosure proceedings when necessary and commended staff across related offices for their cooperation. The board signed the formal Order for Collection for Fiscal Year 2022' 2023, authorizing the tax collector to collect taxes and, if needed, levy on property in accordance with law; the order was signed by Chair Tracy A. Johnson and Clerk Julie J. Bennett.
Commissioner Bill Sexton asked why refunds occur; Wilkins explained they result from overpayments or mortgage companies submitting duplicate payments.
