Tri‑County reports local services; supervisors raise EMS staffing concerns

Catherine Maloney, chief financial officer for Tri‑County Community Action Agency, told the Charlotte County Board on March 13, 2024, that Tri‑County maintains an office in the county on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and provides free tax preparation, supportive housing assistance and other services. She said Tri‑County organized an Infant and Maternal Health Coalition in response to Halifax Hospital’s closure of labor and delivery services and will host a workshop and baby shower for expecting mothers on April 18. Maloney said the agency received a clean audit, which is posted on Tri‑County’s website.
Separately during board comments, Supervisor Hazel Bowman Smith raised concerns about EMS coverage in her district. Smith said schedules indicate some stations are not fully staffed and cited Wylliesburg as an example. Supervisor Walter T. Bailey noted recent resignations of the rescue squad captain and lieutenant and said new bylaws to give the Oversite Committee more authority will be presented to address staffing. He asked Administrator Daniel Witt to add an agenda item regarding 'fully staffed' status for the committee’s next meeting.
The board did not take a formal vote on EMS staffing at the March 13 meeting; committee action and follow‑up were directed by supervisors.
