Polk County commissioners approved an amended motion on Nov. 16 to withdraw $60,000 from the county fund balance to complete construction of the Adult Day Health Care Center, with the condition that any subsequent grant funds would reimburse the county’s fund balance.
Commissioner Melton moved to withdraw the $60,000 earmarked for the Center; Commissioner Gasperson seconded. Commissioner McDermott objected to using fund balance before grant avenues were exhausted and warned against depleting reserves; the Board amended the motion to allow reimbursement if grant funding is secured. The amended motion carried 4-1 with Chairperson Cindy Walker the lone dissenter.
Ted Owens, representing the fundraising committee, told commissioners the building is nearly complete and the revised fundraising plan shifts emphasis to tax-deductible scholarship donations to help families afford services. Commissioner Melton also proposed pairing high school students with seniors to build awareness and community ties.
Officials said the $60,000 would flow through the Council on Aging and be used to finalize the Center so programming and lunches can start. No specific grant awards were reported at the meeting; commissioners said they would continue pursuing grants and fund-raising efforts going forward.
The Board’s vote formalizes near-term county support to begin operations while preserving the possibility of reimbursement to the fund balance if outside funding arrives.
