MADISON COUNTY, N.C. — The Madison County Board of Elections met Nov. 4 for an absentee session and approved ballot batches for precincts, finalized its Election Day poll-worker roster and completed security steps for the absentee scanner.
Chair Jerry Wallin called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. and the board approved the agenda by unanimous motion. Secretary Dyatt Smathers proposed the poll-worker list; a motion to approve the Election Day poll-worker roster passed. The list included named judges and temporary office staff assignments for precincts.
The meeting included member reports on operational matters. Member Debbie Ponder warned of potential Election Day traffic issues in Hot Springs. Secretary Smathers reported work on ram board installation at the Sandy Mush precinct and noted a county plan that would house the Board of Elections office in a proposed new judicial complex with expanded early-voting space. Chair Wallin commented on demographic turnout during the early-voting period. Director Jacob Ray thanked staff and party chairs for logistical support during the election.
The board then moved through precinct-by-precinct approvals of absentee ballots. Motions to approve absentee batches were made and seconded as noted in the minutes; the board approved the following ballot counts for immediate processing or inclusion in the absentee count: Beech Glen (25), Ebbs Chapel (6), Grapevine (14), Hot Springs (8), Laurel (7), Mars Hill (24), North Marshall (20), Revere Rice-Core (2), Sandy Mush (3), South Marshall (11), Spring Creek (10) and Walnut (9). The minutes record the board recording an ending absentee ballot count of 436 ballots and sealing the DS200 machine for storage after scanning.
The board duplicated overseas/military ballots with Secretary Smathers serving as caller, Member Ponder duplicating and Members Lewis and Ball observing; duplicated ballots were scanned into the DS200 as documented in the minutes. No public comment was recorded. The board scheduled the next absentee meeting for Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. and adjourned at 5:45 p.m.
