Citizens urge Durham officials to boost disaster readiness, expand HEART and support youth workforce programs

At the start of its April 7 work session the Durham County Board of Commissioners heard public comment from residents raising three recurring themes: disaster-relief readiness, expansion of the HEART program and youth workforce readiness.
James Chavis urged county leaders and the county manager to attend a community meeting focused on disaster-relief readiness in Durham County. Brandon Love and Shanise Hamilton asked the Board to expand the HEART program to operate 24 hours and to pursue integration of HEART services into Durham Public Schools. Dewarren Langley asked the Board to support workforce readiness for young people and specifically requested support for the Charles Hamilton Houston Foundation.
The comments were made during the scheduled 30-minute citizen comment period; the Board did not take immediate action on the requests at the work session and several items were forwarded for staff follow-up or future consideration.
