Meytal Barak, County Early Childhood Coordinator, explained federal and state funding for Head Start programs were at risk of elimination and asked the Board to approve the letter (Consent Item 25-0236). Terry David, identified as President of the North Carolina Head Start Association, told the Board Durham receives $16,000,000 from the Office of Head Start to serve children and families and described the economic and service impacts that would follow if funding were cut.
Commissioner Wendy Jacobs requested staff send the signed support letter to Sen. Thom Tillis, Sen. Ted Budd and Rep. Valerie Foushee on commissioners’ letterhead with pictures and signatures; the Board approved the consent agenda, including the Head Start support letter, by unanimous vote.
The Board took no further formal action beyond approving the letter; no additional funding decisions were made at the meeting.
