Made in Durham presented an update on the BULLS Academy Life Sciences initiative on April 7, describing an approach to scale industry-aligned training and address inequities for Durham opportunity youth.
Casey Steinbacher, executive director of Made in Durham, said the collaborative identified biopharma manufacturing as the initial sector for scaling and that program data show 33 percent employment among program graduates. She said cohorts target residents aged 18–25 from historically excluded populations and that 96 percent of participants are people of color; an alumni association has been launched to maintain engagement. The collaborative seeks to strengthen connections among education providers, certification programs at Durham Tech, employers and supportive services.
Board members asked for additional context and requested that staff provide a 2012 MDC report to the Board for historical comparison.
