Durham commissioners issue several proclamations, make advisory board appointments and meet in closed session

The Durham Board of County Commissioners adopted multiple ceremonial proclamations and announced several board and commission appointments during its March 24 regular session.
Vice Chair Dr. Mike Lee read a proclamation recognizing March 29, 2025 as John Hope and Aurelia Whittington Franklin Orchid Appreciation Day. Commissioner Stephen Valentine read a proclamation designating March 29 as Pearl Fryar Gardening Appreciation Day. Chair Nida Allam read a proclamation designating April 2025 as National County Government Month and noted the State of the County address scheduled for April 28, 2025.
Commissioner Michelle Burton read a resolution celebrating Women in Construction in Durham County. Tammie Hall, Assistant County Manager, introduced Aisha Sarfo (described in the record as president/CEO of the Daniele Company) and Denise Barnes, president of the United Minority Contractors of North Carolina; both thanked the board and highlighted minority- and women-focused contracting and workforce development.
Larissa Williamson, County Attorney, announced appointments to multiple advisory bodies and commissions; the record lists appointees (including some incumbents) for the Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee, City-County Appearance Commission, Durham County Women’s Commission, Durham Planning Commission, Environmental Affairs Board, Industrial Facilities and Pollution Authority, Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee, and the Raleigh–Durham Airport Authority.
Late in the meeting, the board voted to adjourn into closed session under G.S. 143-318.11(a)(5) to receive direction on positions for negotiating the price and terms of real property acquisition and employment contracts. Chair Nida Allam later announced the board had provided direction to staff during closed session; no further public action was recorded.
The ceremonial recognitions and appointment announcements were acknowledged by county staff and community representatives; the body adjourned at 8:08 p.m.
