Board reviews FY26 Durham transit work program; GoTriangle funding sought for fare assistance

Steven Schlossberg, director of finance and budget for GoTriangle, said sales tax revenue is being monitored but the recommended work program remains feasible; he said GoTriangle requested an additional $158,000 to expand the Transit Assistance Program so eligible riders can receive free passes. City transportation staff emphasized the need for a consistent policy to administer low-income fare assistance across Durham County.
Curtis Scarpignato said the Bus Stop Improvement Program and updated transit tracker would collect data on buses built by fiscal year and compare outcomes to presented goals. Sean Egan, City of Durham transportation director, said staff would work to create a consistent policy for low-income fare assistance and recommended reconstituting the Transit Advisory Committee or recurring rider engagement events.
The Board directed staff to create a link between the City and GoTriangle websites to highlight the transit tracker. No formal appropriation was approved at the work session; funding requests will be processed through the regular budget and interlocal agreement procedures.
