Brewster County court approves contracts, grant funding and routine financial items in unanimous votes

Key votes (all passed 5-0 unless otherwise noted): payment of expenses and line-item budget adjustments presented by Comptroller Malynda Richardson; approval of an amended, lower-rate waste disposal contract for Marathon with Republic Services; approval of an addendum to the real property lease with the Marathon Public Library and History Museum; approval of a $91,268.80 funding request for American Communications under Operation Lone Star Grant #4375703 (9/2024–8/2025); and approval of a contract for a Visit Big Bend promotional video as presented by Brewster County Tourism Executive Director Robert Alvarez. The court also approved the minutes of the Aug. 26, 2025 meeting and scheduled its next regular meeting for Sept. 23, 2025 at 9:30 a.m.
Comptroller Malynda Richardson presented the monthly payment and budget materials. Commissioner Sara Allen Colando moved to approve payment of expenses; Commissioner Jim Westermann seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Judge Greg P. Henington later moved to approve proposed line-item adjustments; Commissioner Ruben Ortega seconded and the court approved those adjustments 5-0.
On grant spending, Judge Henington asked for a simplified report on Operation Lone Star grant activities and related reimbursements. The court approved a specific funding request of $91,268.80 to American Communications under Operation Lone Star Grant #4375703 (coverage noted as 9/2024–8/2025); the motion was made by Commissioner Ruben Ortega, seconded by Commissioner Sara Allen Colando, and approved 5-0.
On contracts and leases, the court approved an amended Republic Services contract for Marathon at a lower rate and an addendum to the Marathon Public Library and History Museum lease. Brewster County Tourism’s contract for a Visit Big Bend promotional video was approved as well. No legislative ordinances or regulatory changes were enacted during the session.
The court reiterated the possibility of convening an executive session under Chapter 551 of the Texas Government Code if needed, set the next court date and adjourned at 10:41 a.m.
