Commissioners approve election judges and community grants; library and tourism updates presented

The Brewster County Commissioners Court approved a slate of election judges for the term Sept. 1, 2025 to Aug. 31, 2026 and authorized an Order for Elections on Nov. 4, 2025.
Jessica Elliot, assistant administrator of the Elections Office, and Mary Bell Lockhart, president of the Elections Board, presented the list of election judges; Commissioner Ruben Ortega moved to approve the list and Commissioner Sara Colando seconded. The motion passed 5-0. Elliot and Lockhart also presented an Order for Elections on Nov. 4, 2025; the court approved that order by the same vote.
Amy Fields, executive director of the Sunshine House, and volunteer Chachi Hawkins updated the court on how Brewster County contributions support the organization. Commissioner Ortega moved to approve the resolution for a Sunshine House TDA grant; Commissioner Mo Morrow seconded and the motion passed 5-0.
Dara Cavness, president of the Marathon Public Library board, and Mary Beth Schaffer presented an update on the Marathon Public Library; the item was recorded as a presentation with no action taken. The court also heard tourism updates from Robert Alvarez, executive director of Brewster County Tourism, and approved contracts for AJR Media (AAA ad), an amendment to a Texas Country Reporter contract, and Travel Adventure Shows for the 2026 season (Dallas, Phoenix, New York); Commissioner Ortega moved their approval, Commissioner Colando seconded, and the motions passed 5-0.
Justice of the Peace fee schedules for JP #3 (Marathon, Judge Susana Gonzales), JP #2 (Terlingua, Judge Paul Rashott) and JP #1 (Alpine, Judge Scott Wassermann) were presented as updated fee schedules; the transcript notes presentations but does not record a court vote on those fee schedules.
