Brewster County designates tax official, approves schedule and budget items ahead of FY2026 process

The Brewster County Commissioners Court on July 8 designated Tax Assessor-Collector Sylvia Vega to calculate and certify the county’s 2025 tax rates under Tax Code 26.04(c) and approved several preparatory steps for the FY2026 budget.
Judge Greg P. Henington announced a proposed budget calendar and a set of possible special meetings — July 15, July 29, Aug. 5, Aug. 19, Sept. 2 and Sept. 16 — intended to support the budget process. Henington told the court the deadline for final FY2026 budget approval is Aug. 26.
Commissioners also reviewed a two-line item budget submitted for the 394th District Court; Henington said Brewster County will act as fiscal agent and that other counties did not contest a fiscal agent fee. The court approved inclusion of Special Qualification Pay for county employees to be reflected in the FY2026 budget.
The motions on the tax-rate designation and the budget items were moved by Commissioner Ruben Ortega and seconded by Commissioner Sara Colando; the court recorded both motions as passing unanimously (5-0).
What happens next: the Tourism budget presented at the meeting will be folded into the countywide budget for final review, and the court left open the listed special meeting dates for any additional budget deliberations ahead of the Aug. 26 deadline.
