Brewster County commissioners approve contracts, MSAG road namings, budget amendments and appointments

The Brewster County Commissioners Court on Jan. 28 approved a series of routine and programmatic actions, including appointments, contracts, road-name additions and budget amendments.
Key votes and motions approved by the court included: approval of prior meeting minutes; nomination of Betty Joe Rooney to the Central Appraisal District board for Marathon ISD (motion by Commissioner William “Mo” Morrow; seconded by Commissioner Sara Allen Colando; passed 4-0 with Commissioner Ruben Ortega temporarily stepped out); approval of the Brewster County Historical Committee’s 2025 membership list (motion by Judge Greg P. Henington; passed 5-0); and approval of bonds and oaths for county officials, including Ruben Ortega’s commissioner bond ($3,000) and Sylvia Vega’s County Tax Assessor bond ($22,000, payable to the Governor of the State of Texas).
The court approved a UniFirst contract for Road & Bridge uniforms at $47.35 per month, superseding a prior $111.55/month contract (motion by Commissioner Ortega; seconded by Commissioner Morrow; passed 5-0). The court also approved grant administration services for a USDA Community Wildfire Defense Grant (motion by Judge Henington; seconded by Commissioner Ortega; passed 5-0).
Kayse Muratori, the county 9-1-1 GIS coordinator, presented several roadway names for addition to the county MSAG database; the court approved private-road additions including Bearkat Canyon Road, Longhorn Road, Cougar Road, Big Horn Road and East Elna Road on Terlingua Ranch. Muratori also announced that the EagleView platform is now online and available to county officials.
Comptroller Malynda Richardson presented general bills and budget amendments. The court approved general bills as presented; Commissioner Ortega abstained from a Pinnacle Propane item. The court approved line-item adjustments for the judge’s office, the StoneGarden allocation, and an insurance budget amendment as presented.
Robert Alvarez, executive director of Brewster County Tourism, presented marketing updates and the court approved a $15,000 contract with San Antonio Fox TV for Super Bowl advertising (motion by Commissioner Ortega; seconded by Commissioner Colando; passed 5-0).
Several routine departmental reports were presented by the Road & Bridge superintendent (Johnny Salcido), Emergency Management Coordinator James Etchinson, County Treasurer Julie Morton and Comptroller Malynda Richardson; no substantive new policy was adopted during those reports.
The court scheduled a special Commissioners Court meeting for Feb. 11, 2025 in Terlingua and the next regular meeting for Feb. 25, 2025 in Alpine. The meeting adjourned at 11:59 a.m.
