Butler County supervisors choose Compensation Board recommendations for FY26 proposed budget mailing

During a Feb. 25 FY26 budget workshop, Butler County Auditor Leslie Groen presented alternative budget scenarios that assumed either maximum recommended salary increases or a 3% across-the-board raise and compared high- and low-levy rate outcomes.
Groen told the board that "budgets and levy rates can be decreased from the published rates and expenses but not increased," and noted Rural Supplemental funds could be applied to certain budget areas. The board discussed which salary-raise scenario to include on the proposed budget statement mailing.
Deb McWhirter, a member of the Butler County Compensation Board, spoke in favor of the Compensation Board's recommendations. County Recorder Janice Jacobs reminded supervisors that they had chosen to re-establish the Compensation Board and explained the board's purpose and work.
Chairman Rusty Eddy said he favored budgeting with a 3% increase, while Supervisors Greg Barnett and Wayne Dralle expressed support for using the Compensation Board's FY26 recommendations. Auditor Groen will prepare the initial proposed budget using the Compensation Board's recommendations for the public mailing.
The decision at the Feb. 25 meeting was to reflect the Compensation Board's recommendations in the proposed budget mailing; supervisors may later adjust levy rates or expenses downward before final adoption.
