Summary
The board unanimously approved a $79,675 agreement with Wiser Consultants for signalization at Thrasher Pike and Montlake Road and discussed TRAINFO predictive crossing technology that the city manager says is endorsed by Norfolk Southern and could give 30-minute blockage notices for EMS response.
The Soddy-Daisy Board of Commissioners on Sept. 15 authorized the mayor to sign a $79,675 agreement with Wiser Consultants for signalization work at Thrasher Pike and Montlake Road.
City Manager Johnson described the contract and said the company has worked with the city previously. The motion to approve the Mayor's signature was moved by Commissioner Shipley and seconded by Vice-Mayor Cothran; the board voted unanimously.
Johnson also reported on a Zoom briefing with TRAINFO, which he said offers technology that can predict crossing blockage up to 30 minutes in advance and that, according to the company, Norfolk Southern endorses the product. Johnson said he plans to research the system further and meet with John Stuermer at Hamilton County E-911 to explore whether county systems could integrate the technology. Commissioner Shipley said the railroad should pay for safety improvements.
Officials noted Parkridge Hospital has raised concerns about the Harrison Lane crossing in relation to the hospital’s proposed new emergency room. Johnson said adoption or implementation of predictive technologies would likely be a long and potentially expensive process and that further study is required.
The board also received a separate report that five RFQs for a new building were narrowed to two firms (MBI and Allen & Hoshall) and authorized City Manager Johnson and Public Works Director Grant to select one of the firms.
