Commissioners authorize repairs after Fairgrounds fire system failure; $20,000 available, $40,000 needed

Kittitas County staff reported on Jan. 15 that the Fairgrounds fire system had failed and recommended prompt repairs. County Administrator Zack DeHaven said $20,000 is currently set aside in the Event Center budget for potential fixes but the project is estimated at $40,000, and that a first-quarter budget amendment could cover the remainder.
“There is $20,000 set aside in the Event Center budget for potential fixes. The project is estimated at $40,000,” DeHaven told the finance study session. He said the system needs to be fixed sooner rather than later and that staff could prepare a Q1 budget amendment for the additional funds.
Commissioners Laura Osiadacz and Cory Wright authorized proceeding with the repairs and the proposed budget amendment. Staff did not record a formal motion or vote in the study session minutes but were directed to move forward with repairs and prepare the required budget paperwork.
Why it matters: the Fairgrounds hosts county events and a prolonged failure of safety systems can limit facility use and raise liability concerns. The board authorized staff to expedite the repairs and address the funding gap through the regular budget-amendment process.
Next steps: staff will contract for repairs and return a budget amendment for the board’s consideration in Q1.
