Cheatham County signs MOU with school board for property conveyance and replacement building; school leaders outline phased return to in-person learning

Cheatham County commissioners on Jan. 25 approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Cheatham County Board of Education that will convey a portion of Board property in Ashland City to the county. Under the MOU, the Board will convey the parcel by quitclaim deed and the county will construct, at county expense, a 40-by-50-foot metal storage building on the Board's remaining Ashland City property; the new building will become property of the Board upon completion.
The MOU specifies further terms: the county will move Board chattel into the new building within 30 days of completion, pay $6,599.56 for shelving removed from the existing storage building, and assemble and install metal shelving the Board purchases for the replacement building. The county will also have a temporary vehicle easement across Board property to Chestnut Street (the county is responsible for maintenance of the easement), will obtain and pay for a survey to record the easement, and will be responsible for subdivision costs if subdividing the parcel is required. The commission approved authorizing the mayor to sign the MOU by roll call vote, 12–0 (Resolution 9A). (MOU text appears in the meeting packet, Exhibit A.)
The meeting also confirmed two Water/Wastewater Board appointments: Dan Cook was confirmed to replace Eric Lockert, and James (Jim) Dillingham was reappointed for another term beginning Jan. 1, 2021 and ending Dec. 31, 2025 (Resolutions 9B and 9C, roll-call votes 12–0).
Education matters: Dr. Cathy Beck of the School Board told commissioners that elementary schools had resumed traditional learning and that middle schools were scheduled to return to traditional learning on Feb. 1, with the district hoping high schools will follow by mid-February. The commission’s Education Committee moved, and the body approved, a motion to support the district’s COVID-19 policy by voice vote (Resolution 12).
Why it matters: the MOU formalizes a property exchange and county construction obligation that affect facility use in Ashland City and clarifies financial responsibilities, easement terms and timing for moving district equipment. The county’s confirmation of board appointees fills governing vacancies for water and wastewater oversight.
