Cheatham County approves updated Planned Growth Areas and Rural Areas unanimously

ASHLAND CITY, Tenn. — On Nov. 21 the Cheatham County Legislative Body unanimously adopted an updated designation of Planned Growth Areas (PGAs) and Rural Areas (RAs), approving the Growth Plan report attached to Resolution 5.
The motion, moved by Diana Lovell and seconded by Bill Powers, passed by roll‑call vote 12–0. County planning staff and municipal planning commissions had reviewed and recommended retaining or, in a few municipal cases, revising urban growth boundaries. The Growth Plan materials in the record note that Cheatham adopted a countywide plan in 1999 and that the coordinating committee met in 2022 to confirm the current designations.
Why it matters: Tennessee’s Public Chapter 1101 requires counties and municipalities (except metropolitan governments) to develop countywide growth plans that establish urban growth boundaries and identify PGAs and RAs. Adoption provides a countywide framework used by local governments for long‑range planning, permitting guidance and transportation coordination.
What’s next: The county clerk’s record includes a copy of the Growth Plan report and map; planning staff will continue to work with municipalities and property owners on site‑specific applications that come forward under county and municipal procedures.
