Cheatham County commission rejects $1.99M school maintenance note after debate

A proposed capital outlay note of up to $1,991,000 to fund school maintenance upgrades failed on a 5–6 roll-call vote at the Cheatham County Legislative Body meeting May 15 in Ashland City.
The motion, introduced as part of the Board of Education and budget committee items, drew several commissioners into discussion over the appropriate funding source. Commissioner Walter Weakley said he believed the work should be funded from the School Fund Balance rather than by issuing a note. After discussion the assembly voted against the motion.
Separately, commissioners approved multiple General Purpose School Fund budget amendments that move state funds into specific lines for regular instruction, Career and Technical Education, health services, food service, transportation and summer learning camps. Those school-focused amendments passed by roll call; the larger capital note was the only school-related item that failed.
