Town staff and council discussed structural and safety problems at the Snowflake‑Taylor Library during the Sept. 3 work session, with staff warning that repairs could temporarily close the library and that several interior upgrades are also needed.
Ella McAdams, staff, said the library building “wasn’t constructed very well since it wasn’t intended to be a library,” and cited drainage problems around the building and a roof that needs to be replaced. McAdams told the council the work could force the library to “be shut down for at least a week.” She said she would like the library to remain at the current location long term if feasible.
Mayor Byron Lewis asked whether the academy building had been sold; Brian Richards, staff, said the town has approvals from the council and the school. McAdams noted the possibility of future growth from the north side and listed additional needs she is trying to meet within the current budget, including shelving, technology upgrades and new countertops. Council‑elect Travis Kay observed that remodeling an older building is expensive and asked at what point the town should consider building a new facility instead of renovating.
No formal decision was made at the work session; staff encouraged continuing the discussion at the regular council meeting where timing, scope and funding would be addressed.
