Sevier County accepts resignation of Rep.-elect Fred Atchley; two district seats to be filled in December

At its Nov. 18, 2024 meeting, the Sevier County Commission voted unanimously to accept the resignation of Fred Atchley, who was recently elected to the state legislature. Chairman Larry Waters said the resignation is effective Jan. 1, 2025, and that the commission will fill Atchley’s District 5 Seat B and the seat left vacant by the late Commissioner Frank Parton (District 5 Seat C) at the commission’s next meeting, scheduled for the third Monday in December.
Waters said the Tennessee Code Annotated (TCA) prescribes the commission’s procedure for filling vacancies; the steering committee will review applications, conduct interviews in accordance with commission rules, and forward recommendations to the full commission. The chair said the county will provide public notice and allow time for applications before interviews are scheduled.
Commissioner G. Cole moved to accept the resignation; Commissioner C. Rauhuff seconded the motion, which passed by roll call vote 20 Yes, 0 No, 4 Absent. The meeting record notes that Commissioner Atchley was unable to attend because of scheduling related to preparation for his new role as state representative.
The commission did not name interim appointees at the meeting; the steering committee will manage the application review and interview process and present candidates at the December meeting.
