Sevier County says providers will review corrected maps before applying for broadband funds; buildout target window three years

Commissioner Warren Hurst requested an update on an internet-provider grant at the Aug. 19 Sevier County Commission meeting. Andrew J. Temple, Director of Grants and Special Projects, told commissioners the bid program closed at the end of July and allowed residents and businesses to submit locations where federal/state provider maps showed coverage but service did not exist.
Temple said the mislabeling affects areas such as Jones Cove near the lake, Allensville Road, Alder Branch in the Dupont area, Newport Highway and Wears Valley outside the main town. The next step, he said, is for internet providers to review those flagged cases and verify coverage. After providers complete the review, they will have an opportunity to apply for funds to expand service to those locations.
Temple explained that providers awarded funds would have roughly three years to complete buildouts and meet targets required by the state; if providers do not meet those obligations they would have to repay the funds plus a penalty estimated around 20–25 percent. Temple estimated the program would begin early in 2025 once funds are allocated and agreements are in place.
